Fire Alarms Blare During UNLV Shooting
911 calls released by police on Friday revealed the horror and terror experienced by students and faculty during the recent shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which resulted in the deaths of three professors.
During the calls, voices of frightened students and faculty can be heard in the background as fire alarms blared and shots were fired outside. A woman described the situation as sounding like the shots were right next door and pleaded for help, expressing her desire to go home.
The gunman, 67-year-old Anthony Polito, entered UNLV’s business school and began firing shots, resulting in the deaths of three professors and a visiting professor being hospitalized with serious injuries.
University President Keith Whitfield announced that in the aftermath of the shooting, students and faculty are not expected to return to campus this year and final exams have been canceled.
Police believe Polito had been denied various job opportunities at Nevada colleges and universities, leading them to believe financial struggles could have been a factor in the motive for the shooting.
Despite the tragic nature of the shooting, the exact motive is still unknown.
Following the tragedy, President Biden visited Las Vegas to express his condolences and support for the community.
