Supercopa de Espana 2023/24: Teams, Schedule, Results, and Format Explained

The Community Shield is often looked down upon in regards to its significance, but try telling those across Europe that silverware of this kind is worth overlooking. While England and Germany include their respective super cups as part of the pre-season programme, others, like Italy and Spain, make more of an occasion out of the event and stage it midway through the season. Typically, these duels are one-off matches contested between the previous season’s league victor and major domestic cup winner. However, La Liga, in particular, has tried to make the Spanish Super Cup – or Supercopa de Espana – much more of an occasion. They’ve taken the competition overseas since the competition reformatting of 2019, and it will once again be played away from Spanish shores in 2024. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2023/24 Supercopa de Espana. Since 2019/20, the Supercopa de Espana has been contested between four teams having been a two-team affair since 1982. The previous iteration of the competition was played over two legs. In 2023/24, Barcelona (La Liga winners), Real Madrid (Copa del Rey winners), Osasuna (Copa del Rey runners-up), and Atletico Madrid (3rd in La Liga) will compete in the Supercopa de Espana.

With four teams competing for Supercopa de Espana glory, two semi-finals will be held (over one leg) with the victors advancing into the final on 14 January 2024. The first semi-final is scheduled for 10 January. Primera Federación revealed the two semi-final fixtures back in October with Real Madrid taking on Atletico Madrid and holders Barcelona facing Osasuna. Saudi Arabia has hosted the Spanish Super Cup since the format change in 2019 – except for the 2020/21 season due to Covid restrictions – and that will once again be the case in 2024. The KSU Stadium in Riyadh will play host to all three fixtures.
