AMARAVATI: In Andhra Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to have the upper hand as the principal parties, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-Jana Sena Party combine, are subservient to the BJP, despite the BJP having fewer votes than NOTA (None of the Above) in the State.
It is interesting to note that top BJP leaders, such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, have been giving frequent appointments to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The YSRCP’s electoral strength and welfare schemes make the party favorable to the BJP’s clandestine support.
So far, YS Jagan has not made any negative remarks against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government at the Centre and has consistently supported the BJP. However, the BJP occasionally surprises YS Jagan, indicating that their support is not unconditional. For instance, Amit Shah recently met TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh in New Delhi to discuss the political situation in the State after the arrest of his father Chandrababu Naidu in the AP Skill Development Corporation scam.
Previously, Chandrababu Naidu and State president Daggubati Purandeshwari met BJP national president JP Nadda, raising speculations of a possible alliance between the two parties ahead of the 2024 elections. However, the BJP exercises caution with Naidu, who broke the alliance with the NDA twice in the past.
During Naidu’s first alliance in 1998, he provided outside support to the NDA, resulting in Atal Bihari Vajpayee becoming the Prime Minister. The TDP ended the alliance after losing the general election in 2004. A decade later, the TDP formed an alliance with the BJP, claiming it was for the benefit of the State and the country. However, in 2018, Naidu exited the NDA, blaming the Modi Government for not granting special category status to Andhra Pradesh.
As a response, the BJP proposed raids against the TDP, leading to the defection of four TDP Rajya Sabha MPs to the BJP – Y S Chowdary aka Sujana Chowdary, T G Venkatesh, C M Ramesh, and Garikapati Mohan Rao. These raids were seen as a warning from the BJP to the TDP about the consequences of severing ties with them.
Pawan Kalyan, the president of the Jana Sena Party, also had a complex political journey. Initially, he supported the TDP-BJP alliance in 2014 for the sake of Andhra Pradesh’s best interests after the State’s bifurcation. In 2018, he left the NDA over the issue of special category status for AP. In the 2019 elections, the Jana Sena faced a major defeat. However, in 2020, Pawan Kalyan joined forces with the BJP to protect the State’s interests.
Currently, Pawan Kalyan is working towards an alliance between the TDP-JSP-BJP to overthrow the YSRCP Government in the 2024 elections. However, the BJP has been hesitant in accepting his proposal. Additionally, the BJP appointed Daggubati Purandeswari as the State president in July 2023 to counter Naidu and strengthen the party’s position in Andhra Pradesh.
In summary, the BJP seems to enjoy the ongoing political dynamics in Andhra Pradesh and continues to exert control over the major parties.
