Shilpa Shetty, in her extensive thirty-year career in Bollywood, has ventured into entrepreneurship as well. The former actor now entrepreneur recently shared her journey of changing the approach towards brand endorsements in the film industry by investing in companies she resonated with. In an interview with Zoom, she admitted not being very savvy with finances but acknowledged inheriting the business acumen.
Shilpa, aged 48, revealed that she studied commerce before entering the film industry at 17 to assist in managing her father’s business.
Discussing her approach of not just endorsing brands but also investing in them, she mentioned MamaEarth. She recounted how she invested in the brand when it was valued at Rs 35 crore, and it has now grown exponentially to a Rs 11,000 crore unicorn. She emphasized her choice to have a stake in the companies she endorses rather than just accepting monetary endorsements.
Shilpa likened her business discussions to those on Shark Tank and expressed her sound understanding of her risk appetite. She emphasized investing in brands that provide solutions to existing problems and align with her beliefs in health and wellness.
Reports from Times of India and Exchange4media estimate Shilpa’s annual income from brand endorsements at around Rs 80-90 crore, charging Rs 6-7 crore for a day’s commitment. Her net worth is estimated at Rs 150 crore. Besides being a successful actor, she co-owns the upscale restaurant, Bastian, with her husband Raj Kundra.
