Home Minister Amit Shah declared that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will never be revoked, emphasizing that the BJP government will not compromise on this issue. In an interview with ANI, Shah stated, “It is our sovereign right to grant Indian citizenship in our country, and we will stand firm on this decision. The CAA will remain in effect.”
Regarding the opposition’s stance on the CAA, Shah dismissed any chances of them repealing the law if they come to power, citing their slim chances of winning. He also refuted claims that the CAA is unconstitutional, asserting that it does not violate any constitutional provisions.
Shah addressed criticisms about the timing of the CAA notification, stating that the BJP had outlined its agenda in its manifesto prior to the 2019 elections. He emphasized that the CAA is a law for the entire country and reiterated that it will be implemented.
The Home Minister reiterated the government’s moral obligation to safeguard the rights of persecuted individuals. The Union Home Ministry recently released rules for the implementation of the CAA, which aims to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
