Google has introduced a new feature called “Summarize this email” for the Gmail app on both Android and iOS. This feature is powered by AI and is currently only available to paid subscribers. It provides a summary of email threads with more than two responses. Along with this, Google has also added a Gemini side panel to Gmail’s web interface.
This new AI-powered feature aims to streamline and condense email communication for users. The “Summarize this email” button will appear in email threads with over two responses, allowing users to view highlights of the thread in a Gemini window that slides up from the bottom of the screen. Users can copy the highlights, rate the response with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and access proactive prompts by tapping the Gemini sparkle icon.
Google has started rolling out this new capability to eligible users, with plans to make it available to all eligible users in the coming weeks. The Gemini side panel on the web version of Gmail offers additional features such as summarizing email threads, suggesting responses/drafting emails, and answering questions based on inbox and Drive information. This feature is powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro and can be accessed by users subscribed to Gemini plans like Gemini Business, Enterprise, Google One AI premium, and Gemini Education.
