Edgar Cervantes from Android Authority reports that a possible new feature on Google Play may allow users to update apps that have been sideloaded or downloaded from third-party stores. The upcoming change will display available updates for sideloaded apps on the Play Store and provide the option to update from there. This update ownership functionality was introduced with Android 14 to prevent users from mistakenly updating apps from the wrong source. However, the current feature does not include the option for updates from sideloaded or third-party apps. A recent APK teardown of the Play Store suggests that users may soon have the option to update apps from different sources with a new “Update from Play” button. This button will switch the update ownership to the Play Store, giving users the choice to update apps from there instead. It remains unclear if this feature will apply to all future updates, but only time will tell as the change is rolled out to users.
