I was pleasantly surprised by my experience with Gemini Live.

At today’s Made by Google event, Google unveiled a variety of new hardware, including four phones in the Pixel 9 series, the new Pixel Watch 3, and the Pixel Buds Pro 2. However, many would argue that Gemini stole the spotlight at the launch event.

One of the new features introduced by Google in the Gemini toolbox is Gemini Live, which offers a more conversational experience with the generative AI system. Instead of the usual command and response format, Gemini Live allows for a natural back-and-forth interaction. This enables users to interrupt, clarify, or simply engage in a casual conversation with Gemini. This technology is similar to OpenAI’s GPT-4o, which is not yet fully available to the public.

During the event, Google demonstrated how Gemini Live works on stage through a live demo. However, I was eager to try it out myself in a less controlled setting. While I couldn’t test it on a Pixel 9 just yet, I had the opportunity to interact with Gemini Live spontaneously. Surprisingly, the experience was incredibly realistic and almost too good to be true.

Following the Made by Google livestream, I participated in a Gemini Live demo using a Pixel 9 Pro. A member of the Gemini team guided me through a natural conversation about video games, suggesting titles based on my preferences. The interaction felt organic and seamless, with Gemini providing tailored recommendations like a human friend would.

My experience with Gemini Live revealed two key observations. Firstly, the voice of Gemini Live felt remarkably human-like, enhancing the conversational flow and information delivery. Unlike Google Assistant’s robotic tone, Gemini Live was engaging and relatable. Secondly, the accuracy of Gemini Live’s responses was impressive, suggesting games that aligned with my interests in a coherent manner.

Overall, my interaction with Gemini Live left me intrigued and slightly unsettled by its human-like qualities. Despite being an AI algorithm, talking to Gemini Live felt remarkably natural. I look forward to exploring its capabilities further and delving into more in-depth conversations.
