According to reports, both AMD and NVIDIA are developing Arm-based processors for PCs, joining Qualcomm in the market. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors have been the exclusive choice for Arm-based Windows PCs, but this agreement is said to end in 2024. AMD and NVIDIA are expected to release their chips as early as 2025.
Microsoft is reportedly encouraging AMD and NVIDIA to offer advanced AI features in their chips. Additionally, gaming-focused features like desktop-class graphics hardware and image upscaling technology are expected. While 5G connectivity is unlikely as AMD and NVIDIA are behind Qualcomm in this area, NVIDIA’s partnership with MediaTek could potentially bring 5G modems to their PC processors.
Arm-based PC processors typically offer better battery life compared to x64-based chips, allowing for longer endurance in laptops and thinner, lighter designs.
Qualcomm has a history of producing Arm-based chips for Windows, but their chips have been criticized for their lack of horsepower, especially in comparison to Apple’s Arm-based M1 chips. The entry of AMD and NVIDIA into the market could improve the sales of Arm-based Windows PCs and potentially reduce Qualcomm’s market share.
