Is Humanity Prepared for the Leap Second’s Monumental Leap?

Later this month, delegations from around the world will gather in Dubai to discuss international treaties on radio frequencies, satellite coordination, and other technical issues. One of the key topics of discussion will be the problem of diverging clocks. For the past 50 years, the international community has relied on two different methods of timekeeping. One method is based on Earth’s rotation and the position of the sun and stars, while the other uses atomic time based on cesium atoms. The issue is that these two methods of timekeeping do not align perfectly, leading to the need for leap seconds to sync them up. The proposal being put forward is to introduce a leap minute every half-century, allowing atomic time to diverge from cosmos-based time and reducing the need for frequent adjustments. This proposal aims to create a more relaxed and less burdensome system for timekeepers, technology companies, and countries alike.
