An Early Peek into Google Wallet’s New Feature: Scan and Save Anything (APK Teardown)

Google Wallet is set to receive a new feature that will allow users to scan and save digital copies of text-only documents and passes. Although the feature has not officially rolled out yet, we were able to manually enable it for an early preview. This new feature will automatically scan and save various types of documents, including Passports, Loyalty cards, Resident permits, and Student IDs.

During the Google I/O event earlier this year, Google showcased this upcoming feature. An APK teardown can provide insight into potential future features based on code that is currently being worked on. However, it is important to note that not all predicted features may make it to a public release.

The new feature, called the “Everything else” option in the Google Wallet’s Add to wallet menu, will first ask for permission to process your data locally before allowing you to scan and save two types of documents: normal and private. Normal documents, such as Student IDs, can be added without biometric authentication, while private documents like Driver’s licenses will require biometric authentication.

The feature will automatically identify and categorize various types of documents, including Loyalty cards, Passports, Resident permits, Student IDs, and more. If a document cannot be identified, it will be categorized as “Other” and you can manually enter the information. You can also add additional fields to scanned documents and change categories if necessary.

Although this feature is not yet available in the current stable release of Google Wallet, it is expected to roll out in a future update. We will keep you updated on its availability.
