Android 15 has the ability to predict the longevity of your phone’s storage chip

Edgar Cervantes from Android Authority reports that Android 15 is introducing a new feature that will inform users about the remaining lifetime of their device’s internal storage. Just like other hardware components, storage chips have a limited lifespan that is impacted by usage. While Android does run maintenance on storage chips to prolong their lifespan, users currently do not have visibility into how much life is left in their device’s storage chip. With smartphone companies extending their update policies, it is crucial to consider factors like parts availability and ease of self-repair when purchasing a new phone.

Google has been working on providing users with useful information about their phone’s hardware, starting with battery health-related details. In the Android 15 update, a new “Device Diagnostics” app will surface information about the health of the storage component. This app will utilize a new storage lifetime API to provide users with the remaining lifetime of their internal storage device in percentage form.

While the patch implementing this API has not yet been merged into AOSP, it is already present and enabled in the Android 15 beta 1 release. The API will offer insight into the storage chip’s remaining lifetime, allowing users to monitor its health and make informed decisions. However, not all devices will support this feature, as it depends on the device’s ability to collect and share information with the Android OS through the Health HAL.

Overall, the upcoming Android 15 update will bring transparency regarding the lifetime of a device’s storage chip, providing users with valuable information to manage their device effectively.
