Android 15 prepares to introduce Ultra HDR to the masses

TL;DR: Devices that claim to meet performance class 15 will now have to support Ultra HDR for the main rear and front-facing cameras, according to the Compatibility Definition Document for Android 15. This requirement is optional for high-end devices and only some will choose to declare that they meet the standard. Ultra HDR is an image format introduced in Android 14 that allows devices with HDR displays to see high-quality images while legacy devices see a standard version.

With the release of Android 15, Google updated the Compatibility Definition Document with new provisions related to performance class. This standard defines device hardware and software capabilities that go beyond the baseline requirements for Android compatibility. Performance class 15 includes support for Ultra HDR, denoted as JPEG_R in the document.

Although not all devices that upgrade to Android 15 will be required to support Ultra HDR, there is a growing trend of OEMs adopting the format voluntarily. This move towards standardization is beneficial as it eliminates the need for OEM-specific HDR formats. With more devices supporting Ultra HDR, third-party camera apps may soon offer updates to enable Ultra HDR capture.
