; Visiting the Met’s New show on “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism”
Back in 1969, the Metropolitan Museum caused an uproar with their exhibition “Harlem on My Mind: Cultural Capital of Black America, 1900-1968,” which did not include any visual art beyond documentary photomurals. Black artists, many of whom worked in Harlem just blocks north of the museum, picketed the show denouncing it as evidence of art world racism. As someone who saw that show as a student in New York in 1969, I am excited to see a new exhibition, “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism,” which is scheduled to open at the Met in February. The inclusion of a wealth of African American art considered inadmissible to the Met half a century ago, and the exhibition’s larger promise to fully position modern African American art as an international modernism generator, are both exciting prospects.
Looking Forward to “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”
Next year brings a lot of sequels, but the one I’m most excited for is “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” This film explores the origin story of the character played by Charlize Theron in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” I am revisiting all the “Mad Max” movies in preparation.
“The New Look” on Apple TV+
This year, there are many intriguing bits of casting for new television series. The one that has me the most curious is the British actor Tom Hollander playing Truman Capote in FX’s “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.”
Excited for the Return of “The Wiz” on Broadway
I am anticipating the return of “The Wiz” to Broadway this April at the Marquis Theater with more zeal than usual.
New Works by Itamar Moses
February brings two distinctly different works by Itamar Moses to New York stages.
Looking forward to “Argylle”
“Argylle” is directed by Matthew Vaughn and features a stacked cast making it a promising addition to the spy movie genre.
Final Season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
The last season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” premiers on February 4th, and it is a sad occasion because it is one of the few shows that I watch exactly when it airs.
Third Season of “Girls5eva”
Season 3 premieres on March 14 on Netflix, and I am looking forward to another season filled with zingy jokes and warped nostalgia.
