APK teardown reveals Gemini receiving numerous new Google extensions

In an APK Teardown of the latest Google beta app conducted by Edgar Cervantes at Android Authority, information regarding several upcoming Google extensions has been revealed. These extensions include Home, Phone, and Utilities, as well as Keep, Tasks, and Calendar – all of which were previously confirmed by Google. It remains uncertain whether these extensions will all be released simultaneously or gradually introduced.

Google’s Gemini is a powerful platform on its own, but some of its most intriguing features require connections to other platforms through extensions. The current Google Flights extension, for example, provides real-time flight information to fulfill travel-related prompts in Gemini. Additional extensions are already available for Google Hotels, Maps, Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music, with more on the way based on the latest Google app beta teardown.

The APK teardown offers insights into potential features that may be added to a service in the future, based on in-progress code. However, it is important to note that predicted features may not always make it to a public release. The latest Google app beta (v15.29.34.29 beta) includes details on six new extensions for Gemini, half of which have not been officially announced. Screenshots provide a glimpse into how these extensions will appear and the functions they will offer.

One of the most anticipated unannounced extensions revealed in the teardown is Google Home, which will enable Gemini to control smart home appliances directly without relying on Google Assistant. Another upcoming extension will focus on phone app commands, allowing Gemini to handle call-related tasks independently. Additionally, a Utilities extension is expected to provide direct interaction with phone settings and apps for tasks like taking photos and adjusting volume.

Furthermore, references to extensions for Google Calendar, Keep, and Tasks – previously announced at Google I/O 2024 – were also found in the APK teardown. It remains unknown whether these extensions will function as standalone additions or be integrated into the existing Workspace extension. The rollout strategy for these extensions is also unclear, with uncertainty about a simultaneous or gradual release approach.
