APK teardown reveals that Quick Share may soon have its “Use mobile data” toggle restored

Rita El Khoury from Android Authority reports that Google may be bringing back the “use mobile data” toggle to Quick Share, which was originally present in Nearby Share but removed when the service was renamed. Speculation suggests that Quick Share could potentially use mobile data more freely when transferring files, as there is no mention of restrictions for small files. Quick Share, Android’s answer to AirDrop, merged with Samsung’s Quick Share for Galaxy phones to allow for seamless sharing between Android devices, Chromebooks, and Windows PCs. Despite its versatility, Quick Share lacked the ability to control data usage, a feature that many users valued in Nearby Share. However, Google Play Services v24.41.32 beta appears to be adding back the “use mobile data” option, providing users with more control over their data connection when sharing files. While the previous version of this feature mentioned that data could be used for small files, the new option does not include this limitation, hinting at potentially broader use of mobile data for file transfers. Users with limited data can still toggle this setting off if needed. While Quick Share currently lacks the flexibility of choosing between data, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth-only transfers like Nearby Share did, it is hoped that these options will return in future updates.
