A man from Assam was arrested on Saturday for allegedly killing his 23-year-old roommate and colleague, over a rivalry at work, on Friday.
The Manjalpur police arrested Saifful Intaj Islam (27) with the help of the railway police while he was about to escape from Vadodara.
The deceased, Tejal Ahmed, also a migrant worker from Assam, used to work with Islam in the kitchen of a multispecialty hospital at Manjalpur.
The incident took place on Friday evening outside the accommodation shared by Islam and Ahmed, provided by the canteen contractor of the hospital where they worked.
While Islam escaped after slashing Ahmed in the neck multiple times, Ahmed’s body was discovered by his other colleagues.
The police said that Islam has said that he first attempted to kill Ahmed by slashing his neck on Friday afternoon but failed, as the knife broke. Islam then allegedly purchased a new knife and slashed Ahmed in the neck in the evening.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (F Division) P N Kataria said a long standing rivalry at work led to a discord between the two. “Saifful said that he tried to kill Tejal on Friday afternoon. But he survived and the manager of the contractor got Tejal treated and brought him back to their (accommodation)… The manager told us that on realising that they (Islam and Ahmed) were not getting along a few days ago, they had tried to separate the two,” he added.
“The two did not have any major reason for the enmity but Saifful said that Tejal shrugged work and blamed Saifful for the same, leading to bitterness. We are investigating the motive,” Kataria said.
While Islam hails from Chandanpur village in Assam’s Hojai district, Ahmed was a native of Lokdas village in Assam’s Karimganj. Islam, booked for murder, will be produced in a court on Sunday, said police.
