Catastrophe at Harni Lake: Vadodara tragedy a catastrophe that will take time to sink in | Vadodara News

Vadodara: Chaos prevailed right outside the Harni lake where 14 persons including 12 kids drowned in the lake.
Senior police officials and Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation but no one had a clue about how many passengers had boarded the boat and how many went missing.
While rescue operations were on in the lake, municipal commissioner Dilip Rana was seen confirming the number of victims who were dead and how many were missing two hours after the incident.
While some officials said that four children who came to the spot, didn’t board the boat the others said that four staffers of the school went missing after the incident.
“Some parents, whose kids were rescued safely, left for their homes. We are making calls to get an exact tally and find out how many kids are missing,” Rana told TOI.
The district collectorate officials too seemed unsure about the number of victims.
BJP MLAs from the city too were seen discussing the fallout of the incident at the spot and blaming the VMC for not ensuring that proper safety measures were in place. Ami Ravat, leader of opposition, Congress party, said that it is a clear case of murder.
“It’s utter negligence of the contractor and the VMC officials involved in the contract. A similar incident occurred in 1990s too, but the civic authorities didn’t learn any lesson. We demand FIR against all those responsible for this tragedy,” Ravat said.
Apart from the firemen, the NDRF personnel too joined the rescue operations that went on till late on Thursday night. The rescuers deployed SONAR search, under-water camera search, hooks and fishing nets to search for the bodies. Hundreds of on-lookers gathered at the spot to watch the rescue operations.
