The best new streaming movies this week
Five Nights at Freddy (2023)
Release date: Oct 27 on Peacock
Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio
Mike takes what he thinks is a fairly boring job watching a security monitor for an abandoned play center, similar to something like Chuckey Cheeses, or Showbiz Pizza if you’re old like me. The catch is the entire place is haunted by spirits that have taken over the animatronics. Based on the popular game of the same name, this is a must-watch for fans of the game or those looking for something with similar vibes to movies like M3GAN.
The Nun 2 (2023)
Release date: Oct 27 on Max
Starring: J
The latest chapter is set in 1956, four years after the events of the original. Sister Irene serves in a convent in Italy. But evil never sleeps, and soon she will find herself coming face-to-face with the demon nun, Valak, once again in this highly anticipated sequel. While the original was set primarily in France, the Nun 2 moves most of the action to Romania, starting with the murder of a priest.
Pain Hustlers (2023)
Release date: Oct 27 on Netflix
Starring: Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, Andy Garcia
Featuring an all-star cast, Pain Hustlers looks like a lot of fun. Hoping to provide a better life for her daughter, Liza (Blunt) takes a job from Pete (Evans) at a failing pharma start-up. Her fortunes quickly turn as the company finds success. The catch is the company is now at the center of a criminal conspiracy that could ruin everything.
Susie Searches (2022)
Release date: Oct 27 on Hulu

When Evil Lurks (2023)
Release date: Oct 27 on Shudder
Starring: L
A small rural town learns a demon-infected man is about to give birth to the ultimate evil. Meanwhile, brothers Pedro and Jimmy are doing everything in their power to rid their town of the darkness, or at least to escape it. Be aware this is an intense, violent film so you shouldn’t necessarily expect a happy ending.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
Release date: Oct 23 on Prime Video

The lovable Shazam is back once again, his team (family?) of superheroes in toe. This time the Daughters of Atlas are after them, claiming the powers of the gods were stolen from their father and that they want them back. Of course, their intentions aren’t exactly in the best interest of humanity, leaving Shazam as the only one who can save the world.
What was new and worth watching over the last month
Looking for more recommendations? Here are other great movies that debuted in the last 30 days or so:
No Hard Feelings (2023)
Release date: Oct 22 on Netflix
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Andrew Barth Feldman, Matthew Broderick
No Hard Feelings is a somewhat controversial film, featuring Jennifer Lawrence as an Uber driver who unexpectedly loses her car, putting everything she has at risk. In a desperate situation, she stumbles upon an advertisement offering a free car in exchange for “dating” the advertiser’s socially awkward son. This guy, of course, struggles to communicate with women, let alone pursue more intimate interactions, adding an extra layer of complexity to her mission.
Cobweb (2023)
Release date: Oct 20 on Hulu
Starring: Anthony Starr, Lizzy Caplan, Cleopatra Coleman
In this horror flick an eight-year-old boy starts to hear terrifying, disturbing sounds from behind his walls. Soon they start to give him warnings and instructions. All the while, his own parents claim it’s all just his imagination. In truth, there’s a much darker secret behind the voice.
Night of the Hunted (2023)
Release date: Oct 20 on Shudder
Starring: Moniaia Abdelrahim, J. John Bieler, Abbe Anderson
A woman stops at a remote gas station in the middle of the night, only for her to become the target of a sociopath sniper with a hidden vendetta. Now she must attempt to escape his bullets, hide, and ultimately fight for her life.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023)
Release date: Oct 20 on Peacock
Starring: Lana Condor, Annie Murphy, Will Forte
Despite doing quite poorly in theaters, Ruby Gillman is actually a fun family film about a Kraken teen trying to fit into the human world. Eventually, she learns there’s so much her parents never told her about herself and her abilities. It’s not Dreamworks at its very best, but the characters are still a lot of fun, and I personally enjoyed the fairly obvious jabbing at Disney’s The Little Mermaid. While my fourteen-year-old enjoyed this one too, it’s definitely geared more toward my younger two.
Surrounded (2023)
Release date: Oct 20 on Prime Video
Starring: Letitia Wright, Michael Kenneth, Jeffrey Donovan
Moses “Mo” Washington is a former Buffalo Soldier and freedwoman. After her stagecoach is ambushed by a group of thieves, she sets out to lay claim to a gold mine disguised as a man. This is a great modern western, subverting a lot of the older and outdated concepts of Westerns while blending it with quality dramatic storytelling.
Polite Society (2023)
Release date: Oct 17 on Prime Video
Starring: Ritu Arya, Priya Kansara, Nimra Bucha
Polite Society is a fun comedy adventure movie about two sisters, Lena and Ria. When older sister Lena finds herself engaged, martial artist-in-training Ria believes she must save her sister from the marriage, and the evil family behind it. After enlisting the help of her friends, she sets out to rescue Lena from her soon-to-be-in-laws. This movie looks as silly as it is fun and could absolutely be a great weekend watch.
The Burial (2023)
Prime Video — Oct 11
After a handshake deal goes south, a funeral director named Joseph O’Keefe contacts personal injury lawyer, Willie E. Gary. Together the two take on the Loewen funeral company in a lawsuit, based on a true story.
Fair Play (2023)
Netflix — Oct 6
Two hedge fund managers are secretly in love and hope to get married, though they’ve yet to tell their work about the relationship because it’s against policy. When one of them gets an unexpected promotion over the other, trouble ensues as the couple’s relationship is tested in this erotic thriller.
Strays (2023)
Peacock — Oct 6
From the same minds behind Ted and Sausage Party, Strays isn’t your typical talking dog movie. There’s no happy owner, instead there’s just Doug. The beer-guzzling, abusive jerk wants nothing to do with his dog and ultimately abandons him in the city streets. Reggie vows revenge by teaming up with a pack of strays to get revenge… by literally biting his penis off. Yeah, this pet movie is certainly NOT for kids.
The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (2023)
Paramount Plus — Oct 6
Based on the two-act play of the same name, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial follows the trial of executive officer Stephen Maryk, accused of mutinying against…
