In summary, One UI 6.1.1 introduces Live Effect, a feature that creates a short parallax video from a 2D photo of a person or pet. This video can be used as a lock screen or cover screen wallpaper. Live Effect is currently available on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, with plans to roll out to other Galaxy devices receiving the One UI 6.1.1 update.
During Samsung’s second 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event, the focus was on new cover screen personalization options for the Galaxy Z Flip 6. While features like AI-based custom wallpapers and weather effects were highlighted, the new Live Effect feature wasn’t given much attention. Live Effect uses depth information extracted from 2D images to create a parallax photo, providing a unique and immersive visual experience.
To use Live Effect, simply open a photo with a person or pet in the Samsung Gallery app, swipe up from the bottom, and select the Live Effect option. The feature works offline and saves the result as an MP4 video that can be set as wallpaper on the lock screen or cover screen.
Currently available on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, Live Effect will be coming to other Galaxy devices in the future. With powerful devices capable of handling the necessary computations, it’s no surprise that Live Effect will be expanded to older models. This feature, similar to Google’s “Cinematic Wallpaper” on Pixel devices, adds an exciting dimension to personalizing Samsung devices.
Despite not receiving much attention at Unpacked, Live Effect is a promising addition to Samsung’s lineup, especially considering the company’s partnership with Google for an XR platform. As technology continues to evolve, it’s likely that Samsung and Google will explore more interactive features in the future.
