New Zealand has seized control of the first Test against Australia in Wellington, with Matt Henry wreaking havoc with the hooping Kookaburra.

Henry snared New Zealand’s first breakthrough of the morning, removing Australian opener Steve Smith for 31. Less than 15 minutes before the lunch break at Basin Reserve, Henry nipped a length delivery away from the right-handed Smith, with wicketkeeper Tom Blundell diving across the slips cordon to complete the catch.

After the lunch break, New Zealand quick Scott Kuggeleijn produced a gorgeous delivery that found Marnus Labuschagne’s outside edge, caught at first slip by Daryl Mitchell for 1.

The tourists were suddenly in a spot of bother when Henry castled opener Usman Khawaja with a hooping inswinger, bowling the left-hander through the gate with a peach. The following over, Travis Head flashed at a wide delivery from Will O’Rourke, feathering the ball through to Blundell for 1.

All-rounders Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh combined for a counterpunching 67-run partnership for the fifth wicket before Henry returned after the tea break, removing Marsh for 40.

Australia is 6-197 with Green (44*) and Mitchell Starc (8*) at the crease.
