Demonstrators rallied on Independence Avenue near the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., demanding a cease-fire against Palestinians in Gaza. The progressive Jewish group, If Not Now, held a rally and spoke to lawmakers on Capitol Hill. They called for a cease-fire and expressed their dissatisfaction with the limited number of Congress members who have done the same. Currently, only 18 House members have signed a resolution advocating for a cease-fire, highlighting a divide among Democrats.
The U.S.-Israel alliance has been strong for decades. Since President Harry Truman recognized Israel in 1948, American leaders of both parties have upheld the special relationship. This support is attributed to the strategic importance of having a democratic ally in the Middle East and the influence of pro-Israel groups, such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
However, there have been instances that strained the U.S.-Israel bond, causing Democrats to question their support. Notably, the friction between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former President Barack Obama contributed to this divide. Additionally, the rightward shift in Israeli politics and the generational gap have also played a role. Younger Americans, in particular, tend to be more critical of Israel.
Progressives’ views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have become more divided, especially after recent events. Some progressive groups immediately blamed Israel for the conflict, causing resentment among Democrats who support Israel. However, not all progressives hold this view, and there is a call for better education on the complexities of the conflict. Young progressives often view Israel’s treatment of Palestinians as systemic oppression, drawing parallels with other social justice issues.
While prominent voices within the Democratic Party, such as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, are critical of Israel, they represent a minority within the party. However, the divide within the Democratic Party on this issue is unlikely to disappear.
President Biden has maintained a cautious approach to the conflict, emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defense while advocating for aid to Palestinians and the protection of civilians.
