Delhi’s Air Quality Enters ‘Poor’ Category, Expected to Deteriorate Further Post October 30: Gopal Rai, Delhi’s Environment Minister Reveals

Delhi’s air quality on Wednesday, remained in the ‘poor’ category with the AQI settling at 238 at 10 am. The AQI was recorded at 223 Tuesday, still in the same category.

“Two days back, the AQI level in Delhi was above 300. A decrease in the AQI level has been recorded and it has come below 300. I think that in the days to come, this will keep fluctuating,” the national capital’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai told news agency ANI. He added, “It is being estimated that after 30th October this will perhaps go up again.”

Speaking on the nature of the pollution, the minister said: “We are analysing our data, it shows that PM 10 – dust pollution – is going down in Delhi. Anti-dust campaign has been run across Delhi and all areas are being focussed on. Water sprinkling is being done. So, PM 10 is going down but PM 2.5 is going up.”

Meanwhile, starting today, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will run 40 additional train trips on weekdays across its network, in line with measures under Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which kicks in when the air quality dips to ‘very poor’.

Under Stage II, public transport services are to be intensified in the city. It recommends Metro services and CNG/electric buses be augmented by inducting additional fleet, increasing the frequency of service, and enhancing parking fees to discourage private transport.

On Sunday, Delhi’s air quality had deteriorated to the ‘very poor’ category, the first ‘very poor’ air day so far this season. As per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) figures, the AQI on Sunday was at 313 with PM2.5 being the main pollutant.
