Education News: IIT Kanpur Transformed Me into an Extroverted Individual, Says Student

I first learned about IIT in Class 8 when my father’s friend’s son took my family and me to IIT Bombay to show us the campus and give us a glimpse of what it would be like if I studied there. From that moment, the dream of attending an IIT started to take shape in my mind.

I finally saw my dream come true when I got accepted into IIT Kanpur for Electrical Engineering in 2020. I am currently in my fourth year, having started my studies online due to Covid and moving to the campus in January 2022.

Originally from Pune, Maharashtra, I completed my schooling there and then joined a coaching institute for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) after Class 10. I appeared for the JEE in 2020.

‘Life at IIT Kanpur changed my outlook on life’

Life at IIT Kanpur has been transformative for me. It has helped me come out of my shell and become more outgoing. Unlike other IITs, IIT Kanpur does not allocate hostels based on JEE ranks or branch of study, allowing for a diverse and enriching experience for students.

As I prepare for the upcoming placement season, I start my days planning what to study and which classes to attend. I spend my time studying for placement exams and my seventh-semester exams. During my previous semesters, I was involved in various club activities and worked on projects in the evenings.

I also had the opportunity to lead a team of student guides for an 11-day orientation for over 1,250 freshers at the institute in 2022. Additionally, I enjoy spending time with friends at the open air theatre and participating in various events.

Misconceptions regarding IITians

Contrary to popular belief, the students at IIT are not just focused on academics. Many are passionate about other activities, such as the chess club, which has expanded its events in recent years. Some students have even started an NGO to teach chess to underprivileged students.

‘I see an MBA in my future’

While I am currently focused on improving my coding skills and gaining experience in software development, I am also considering pursuing an MBA in the future. My inclination towards management is growing, and I believe an MBA will help me achieve my career goals.

From JEE Main to JEE Advanced

Although I initially struggled with JEE Main, my father’s encouragement motivated me to improve my rank and ultimately secure a place in IIT. Without his support, I may have pursued engineering through a different route. I am the first in my family to attend an IIT, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

Overall, my experience at IIT Kanpur has been invaluable, shaping my personal and academic growth in ways I never imagined.
