Files by Google is currently testing a new user interface for tablets and other large-screen devices. The redesigned layout divides the file explorer app into two columns, making it easier to access files without constantly switching pages. This new UI is only available on devices running Android 15.
The previous home page UI for Files by Google simply stretched to fit larger screens, but the new split UI organizes home page elements on the left column and displays selected folders or categories on the right. This layout maximizes screen usage and allows for easier navigation through files.
While the search bar still opens in a full-screen mode, the context menu now appears in a smaller column on the left. The Scan button has also been relocated to the bottom right corner of the left column to accommodate additional buttons for the right column.
This new UI can be found in Files by Google version 1.4831.672243909.0, but it is only visible on Android 15 devices. It is unclear if Google plans to extend this layout to older Android versions. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Have a tip? Contact us at news@androidauthority.com to share your insights!
