Get ready to receive reminders from Google Play Store to open your newly downloaded app

TL;DR

  • Google is developing a reminder feature for the Play Store that will remind users to open newly downloaded apps that have not been opened yet.
  • The reminders will be sent within 24 hours of downloading the app and users will receive no more than two reminders per unopened app.
  • The reminder feature is not live yet and will be released to users in the future.

The Google Play Store is a key pillar of the Android experience. While apps can be installed without it, most users rely on the Play Store for all their app downloads. However, sometimes users forget to open apps they download, prompting Google to work on a reminder feature to address this issue.

An APK teardown helps anticipate upcoming features in a service based on code under development. These predicted features may not necessarily make it to a final release.

Google Play Store v41.2.21 references a new “Open app reminder” feature. In the future, if a user downloads an app but doesn’t open it within 24 hours, the Play Store will send a reminder notification to prompt the user to open the installed app.

If the user dismisses the notification and still doesn’t open the app, the Play Store will send another reminder after a period of time. However, users will only receive a maximum of two reminders for each unopened app as per the code found within the app. The reminder feature will continue to send reminders for other newly installed apps up to a maximum of two reminders per app.

This feature will be useful for users who download apps but forget to open them immediately, especially those who prefer to download apps over Wi-Fi. The reminder will help users remember to initialize the installed apps, enhancing their overall experience.

The reminder feature is not currently active in the Google Play Store. It is being tested within the app and is expected to be rolled out soon.
