According to reports, Google is getting ready to introduce email summarization functionality in the Gmail app for Android. This feature could be a more advanced version of the email thread summary feature currently available for Workspace users.
Generative AI technology has made it possible for users to obtain summaries of various types of content, such as articles, documents, and even audio recordings. It seems that Google is now looking to bring email summarization to the Gmail app. PiunikaWeb and code sleuth AssembleDebug have reported that Google is working on adding a “summarize this email” button to the Gmail app for Android. This feature was found in version v2024.03.31.621006929 of the app.
While Google already offers email summaries for users of its Gemini for Workspace platform, this feature is currently only available on desktop and is limited to email threads with more than two replies. The upcoming “summarize this email” button, on the other hand, is expected to be available for consumers on smartphones.
Having this feature on smartphones would be particularly useful for sorting through lengthy or information-heavy emails. It would be even better if Google could eventually make this a feature that operates using on-device AI on supported phones, such as the Pixel 8 series. This would allow users to generate email summaries even when offline, while also maintaining privacy and security.
