Google Search now displays AI-summarized results automatically

Google is testing a new feature that uses AI to generate brief summaries for search results, bypassing traditional links. The Search Generative Experience (SGE) was previously optional, but is now being tested with a limited group of US users without them needing to sign up.

These AI-generated summaries will appear at the top of search results for certain queries, providing quick answers from multiple sources. This could streamline the search process and reduce the need to click on links.

This experimental feature could potentially impact websites relying on SEO traffic, as users may find answers directly in the summaries without visiting the sites. Google is seeking feedback from users who haven’t opted into SGE to understand how this technology could be beneficial.

Although Google states that these summaries will only appear when they offer a clear advantage over traditional results, the shift in user behavior towards relying on AI summaries is evident. This move from opt-in to default for many users reflects Google’s confidence in its AI technology and its potential to change how we search for information online.
