Just when you thought manufacturers had reached their limit in labeling everything with “AI,” generative AI is emerging as a major battleground in the smartphone industry. This technology is already powering various impressive features. While AI wallpapers and generative photo editors are neat, there’s one aspect of mobile messaging that I believe AI could greatly enhance – group chats.
Group chats in messaging apps can be overwhelming and chaotic, leading many users to mute them by default. However, AI-powered summarization could be the solution. Imagine tapping a button to receive a brief summary of the group chat activity since your last check-in. This would eliminate the need to sift through numerous messages to catch up.
AI-based summarization capabilities are already being utilized in some smartphones, such as the Galaxy S24 series, for tasks like summarizing documents and webpages. It’s feasible for Android and messaging apps to incorporate group chat summarization features based on this foundation.
Another AI feature I’d like to see in messaging apps is voice note transcriptions. Reading a transcribed message is often quicker and more convenient than listening to a voice note. Google has already introduced Audio Message Transcription on its Pixel smartphones, but I hope more brands implement this feature across various messaging platforms.
My colleague also emphasizes the need for smarter notifications in messaging apps. He suggests that AI could be utilized to determine which notifications are most relevant to users, enabling more personalized and useful alert settings.
