Left-Congress alliance joins forces for Lok Sabha elections in Tripura, challenging BJP for the first time in 70 years.

Agartala, Mar 22: In a historic move, the Congress and Left parties in Tripura have joined forces for the first time in 72 years to contest the parliamentary elections against the BJP.

In the previous Tripura Assembly election, both parties had contested against the ruling party.

In the upcoming Tripura West Lok Sabha seat elections, the main contest will be between BJP nominee and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and state Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha, who is a common candidate of the INDIA bloc.

Congress President Saha and sitting Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman resigned from the BJP in February 2022 after being elected to the state Assembly on the party’s tickets in March 2018.

Of Tripura’s two Lok Sabha seats — Tripura West and Tripura East – the focus has always been on the Tripura West seat, which the CPI(M) has won 11 times since 1952.

In the last year’s Assembly polls, Saha and Barman ran as Congress candidates against the BJP, with Barman retaining his seat, though Saha did not win.

The Left Front has traditionally contested against the Congress, which last came to power in Tripura in 1988 after defeating the Left parties.
