The Lokpal, an anti-corruption ombudsman, has instructed the CBI to investigate allegations of cash-for-query against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra and submit their findings within six months.
Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha for “unethical conduct” and is now challenging her expulsion in the Supreme Court, has been accused by BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey of asking questions in exchange for cash and gifts from Darshan Hiranandani, a Dubai-based businessman.
The Lokpal bench, consisting of Justice Abhilasha Kumari, and Members Archana Ramasundaram and Mahender Singh, stated in their order that a deeper investigation is required to establish the truth of the serious allegations against Moitra, given her position and status at the time.
The Lokpal emphasized the importance of rooting out corruption and corrupt practices, particularly in public officials like Moitra. It directed the CBI to thoroughly investigate the allegations and submit a report within six months.
Furthermore, the Lokpal order mentioned that Moitra allegedly shared her login credentials with Hiranandani and received financial benefits for asking questions in Parliament related to his business interests.
While the CBI’s preliminary report found some allegations substantiated, further investigation is needed to determine the full extent of the accusations against Moitra.
