Matthew Perry may receive a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, responsible for placing the iconic plaques on Tinseltown sidewalks, confirmed that Perry’s family would have the final say. They also mentioned that no family members have been in contact yet, but it would be a “beautiful thing” if it were to happen.
The Friends star was chosen for a star in 2013, but a ceremony was never scheduled and the award expired in 2018.
The actor passed away on Oct. 28 from an apparent drowning at his Los Angeles home. In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing, Perry openly discussed his battle with addiction. He emphasized in an interview at the time that he wanted to be remembered for more than just his acting or his role as Chandler Bing in the popular NBC sitcom’s 10-season run.
“The best thing about me, without a doubt, is when someone comes up to me and says, ‘I can’t stop drinking. Can you help me?’ I can confidently say yes, follow up, and do it,” Perry shared in a November 2022 interview on the Q with Tom Power podcast. “For a long time, I’ve said that I don’t want Friends to be the first thing people mention when I die—I want that to be the first thing. And I will spend the rest of my life proving it.”
Despite Perry’s passing, his goal continued to manifest on Friday with the announcement of the establishment of the Matthew Perry Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to assisting individuals struggling with substance abuse.
In an official statement released to ET, the foundation stated that it will carry on Perry’s life mission of helping others overcome addiction, which was of utmost importance to him before his death.
“The Matthew Perry Foundation embodies Matthew’s ongoing commitment to helping those battling addiction,” the statement said.
“It will honor his legacy and be guided by his own words and experiences, fueled by his desire to make a positive impact on as many lives as possible,” the foundation’s announcement concluded.
