Meet gets new features: dual camera and dual display support revealed in APK teardown by Google

Google is developing new features for the Gmail app, including dual camera and dual display support. There is also a new option for controlling smart features and personalization settings, as well as a feature for attaching pictures directly from the camera.

An APK teardown of the Gmail app (version 2024.07.28.657813293.Release) revealed code referencing support for dual camera and dual display features. Dual camera uses both front and back cameras, while dual display is a foldable phone feature showing content on both screens.

The code suggests the ability to turn these features on/off while using Google Meet in Gmail. Effects may need to be turned off to use the dual camera feature, and dual display is only available for 1:1 calls. The code also includes strings referencing these features.

Additionally, a new setting for Google Workspace users was found, but accessing it caused Gmail to close with an error. A new option for attaching pictures directly from the camera was also discovered, adding to the existing options in the app.

As with any APK teardown, it is uncertain if or when these features will be implemented by Google. If they are, they could enhance the user experience, especially in conjunction with the seamless device switch feature added to Google Meet in April.
