Strings and flags within Google Messages are hinting at upcoming features, including camera effects for the internal Camera activity within the app. Additionally, Google may be experimenting with removing top contacts during search and deprioritizing drafts from the main chat screen.

Due to Google’s GMS requirements, Google Messages is the default texting app on many flagship Android smartphones. The app is well-liked, so most users don’t mind using it for their daily communication needs. Regular Google Messages users can look forward to more exciting features in the future, such as potential camera effects and a cleaner overall look.

TheSpAndroid has spotted several flags within Google Messages that indicate upcoming features. The app has its own camera activity that could soon have effects features. Details on the effects are currently scarce, but Google is likely to offer the option to toggle the effects on or off.

Google Messages’ top contacts feature, which displays recently and frequently contacted people when the search icon is clicked, may be removed in the future. There is also a new flag that removes the draft message preview from the main screen, giving the app a cleaner look but potentially hiding a helpful feature. These changes may be used for internal debugging purposes, but it remains to be seen which of them Google will consider permanent.

Camera effects would be a welcome addition, depending on how they are implemented. If you have a tip, you can email our staff at news@androidauthority.com. You can choose to stay anonymous or get credit for your information.
