Google has introduced a new banner in the Google Play store to provide users with information about apps that have undergone an independent security review. This banner will first be applied to VPN apps. The purpose of this feature is to offer a simplified view of which apps have been through a security review. Google decided to start with VPN apps due to the sensitive nature of the user data they handle. The banner will appear in the data safety section of the app. It will indicate that apps with the badge have been validated to meet the minimum global security standard. The security review is conducted by a third party using the Mobile App Security Assessment (MASA). Apps that have earned this badge have demonstrated compliance with the minimum industry mobile security and privacy standards. If users want more information or want to view a list of approved apps, they can click on “Learn More” which will take them to the App Validation Directory. This directory contains a comprehensive list of reviewed apps as well as additional technical assessment details.
