Of the five states heading into elections, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram had high rates of youth unemployment, according to data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). Among these states, only Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh had rates lower than the national average. Rajasthan had a youth unemployment rate of 12.5%, Telangana had a rate of 15.1%, and Mizoram had a rate of 11.9%. Additionally, the survey found that the youth unemployment rate was even higher among females, reaching over 40% in states like Kerala, Goa, Lakshadweep, and Andaman & Nicobar Island. The PLFS data also revealed that only a few states, including Gujarat, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Jharkhand, and Karnataka, saw single-digit growth in youth unemployment, while other states and union territories experienced double-digit growth rates higher than the national average. In urban areas, the youth unemployment rate was 17.6%, with Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh having rates higher than the national average of 17.6%. However, the overall unemployment rate in urban areas dropped to 6.6%, the lowest level since the PLFS began in 2018.
