Putin Suggests a Peace Deal in Interview with Tucker Carlson

During his two-hour interview with Tucker Carlson, former host of Fox News, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia repeatedly emphasized Russia’s desire to negotiate a peace deal in Ukraine on Kremlin terms. However, his lengthy discourse about historical topics dominated discussions online and obscured his intended message. In Russia, individuals were also puzzled by Mr. Putin’s failure to emphasize his main ideological commonality with Mr. Carlson’s followers, which is opposition to L.G.B.T.Q. rights and other liberal social causes.

Margarita Simonyan, head of the Russian state broadcaster, RT, expressed regret over Mr. Putin’s lack of emphasis on marketing Russia as a “safe haven for people who are not ready to send their children to be raised by L.G.B.T. people.” She believed that Russia should build an ideology based on this idea. Instead of focusing on this, Mr. Putin primarily delved into a teach-in on 1,000 years of Eastern European history, leaving Mr. Carlson “shocked.” As a result, it was believed that the Russian leader missed an opportunity to effectively convey his message.

Mr. Golosov, a political science professor, stated that Mr. Putin’s main aim was to compel the West into a favorable deal to end the war, allowing Russia to cement its control over captured Ukrainian territory and potentially install a Russia-friendly government in Kyiv.

Throughout Mr. Putin’s historical discourses, he emphasized his intent to negotiate, on his terms, as a way to resolve the conflict. He highlighted that now the West had realized Russia was not facing a “strategic defeat” in Ukraine, he was ready for dialogue directly with Russia for a solution.

The Ukrainian government viewed Mr. Putin’s overtures as an effort to undermine support in Congress for military assistance and dismissed the suggestion of a possible settlement as unserious. The content of his historical discourses did not suggest a Russia willing to compromise.

The Ukrainian government noted Mr. Putin has never backed away from his maximalist demands, interpreting the goal of “demilitarizing” and “de-Nazifying” Ukraine as halting Western military assistance and installing a pro-Russian government in Kyiv.
