Britney Spears made a bold move with the sex scene in Crossroads.
If you haven’t seen the 2002 film, Britney stars alongside Zoe Saldaña and Taryn Manning as three high school graduates who take a road trip from Louisiana to Los Angeles. Towards the end of the movie, Britney’s character Lucy has a sex scene with Anson Mount‘s character, Ben. However, including this scene was a struggle to keep in the final cut.
Why? Well, some people were more focused on the line “not yet a woman” instead of “not a girl” in the song.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Tamra Davis recalled working with Britney, who wanted to present a more mature image with her film debut:
“We definitely had to fight for some stuff. She wanted to challenge the image of her being this forever virgin girl.”
At the time, Britney was transitioning from her teenage years to adulthood, along with her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. The public believed Justin was her first sexual partner, but Britney was ready to break out of that perception.
It’s surprising that Britney had to fight for this scene. As Tamra points out, the scene wasn’t graphic and the movie was rated PG-13. The filmmaker said:
“A kid would not know what the heck is going on! That was a fight I’m happy we won.”
