Teaching My Kids the Value of Choosing Positive Influences Over Negative Ones

Jill Duggar’s childhood was truly horrific, and she reveals many painful incidents in her recent memoir, Counting the Cost. In the past, Jill has criticized her parents for not paying her and her husband for their work on their reality shows. However, her new book has strained her relationship with her parents even further. Not only did Jill make comments about her parents in her memoir, but she also exposes their true evil in her new book. Jill continues to promote her book, and recently spoke publicly about the abuse and trauma she endured while growing up on a podcast. She also discussed the ongoing war between her father, Jim Bob, and her husband, Derick Dillard, as well as the difficulty of raising children who have to be cautious around their own grandparents. Jill doesn’t agree with her parents’ obsession with old school gender roles and teaches her sons to consider other people’s feelings. Although she acknowledges her strained relationship with her family, she doesn’t let it affect her children negatively. Jill jokes that “everybody’s got their crazy.” She encourages her children to distance themselves from toxic people who could harm their mental health. Even though it can be difficult, she believes it’s necessary for their own well-being. Unlike her parents, Jill prioritizes her and her children’s health and happiness above loyalty and secrecy. She has learned from her upbringing and won’t repeat her parents’ mistakes.
