Universal and Illumination’s latest animated film is about a family of ducks who decide to leave their New England pond for an adventurous trip to Jamaica. However, their plans quickly take a turn when they end up in New York City. The film “Migration” is expected to earn between $10 million to $15 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend.
On the other hand, Disney’s most recent animated film “Wish” failed to connect with audiences, generating a total of $55.2 million in the U.S. and Canada. Universal appealed to moviegoers while Disney struggled to attract audiences, with more people gravitating toward Illumination Entertainment’s simple and sweet animated films. Disney will continue to make sequels and focus on established franchises, while Universal plans to maintain its focus on returning to popular characters and worlds.
“Migration” has received favorable reviews from critics and is likely to have a strong box office run, contributing to the studio’s animation brand. Universal’s Illumination has the potential to become the next leading brand for quality animation.
Next year, Disney is set to release “Inside Out 2” while Universal and Illumination will premiere “Despicable Me 4.”
