The most absurd part of “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” comes near the end, after the film has shown itself to be a concert movie and a transparent feat of self-portraiture. During her performance of “Alien Superstar” in Phoenix, the screen goes black and the speakers are silent, and the voices at “Renaissance” mission control sound concerned. After numerous costume changes and Beyoncé proving technicians wrong, she appears in a bee costume designed by Thierry Mugler, complete with a helmet and yellow visor that covers the top half of her face, along with a local TV news desk appearing on stage.
This outrageous costume is not the most shocking part, however. The real surprise is that Beyoncé, a global inspiration and mother of three, is dressed as a bug to deliver the news. This moment is filled with camp and is the wickedest joke on the “Renaissance” album.
