I tested a popular alternative to Notion and I’m prepared to switch

Applications like Notion do not fit neatly into a specific category of tools. As someone who has been searching for the perfect productivity enhancer, I have settled on Notion after experimenting with OneNote, Evernote, and Excel sheets over the years. Notion serves as my task list, project management tool, and hub for essential documents. I even use it to track my supplements.

While I took a chance on Obsidian for its offline-first, locally hosted nature, I found its learning curve and difficulty in syncing across multiple platforms without the premium service discouraging. This led me to search for an alternative, and I found Notion’s online-first approach to be lacking. As I often travel, the lack of an offline mode for impromptu thoughts and the less-than-ideal mobile app usability have pushed me to explore other options.

Recently, I have been trying out Anytype as a potential replacement for Notion. Anytype, like Notion, is a versatile tool that can function as a note-taking app, database, task-tracking system, journaling app, to-do list, or project management solution. It operates as a second brain, offering a catchall solution to organize all your data. Here are some features of Anytype that I appreciate:

– Easy setup with an auto-generated passphrase and offline-first approach
– Native apps that outperform Notion’s apps on various devices
– A combination of the best features from Notion and Obsidian, with added flexibility
– Unique collections and sets for organizing data in a structured manner
– Graph view for visualizing relationships between objects
– Ability to convert data types into widgets for easy access

Despite its advantages, Anytype may not be beginner-friendly, and users may need to consult documentation to navigate certain features. It also lacks seamless data export options like Notion. However, the local-first, offline-first approach of Anytype provides fast speed, data ownership, and privacy benefits. While switching to Anytype may require some learning curve, the app offers a unique combination of Obsidian’s capabilities and Notion’s simplicity.
