It’s not often that a U.S. President takes center stage at the Kennedy Center Honors, an annual awards ceremony honoring lifetime achievements in the arts. However, on Sunday night, President Biden was front and center as Robert De Niro praised Billy Crystal’s career, joking about his potential future as President.
As President Biden reacted, audience members leaped to their feet with applause, some even craning their necks to witness his response from the front row of the balcony.
The event usually void of politics, saw dignitaries and politicians gather to pay tribute to this year’s honorees: Billy Crystal, Barry Gibb, Renée Fleming, Queen Latifah, and Dionne Warwick.
The honorees are surprised by the cast of musicians, actors, and singers who pay tribute to them during the event. This year, bold-named stars such as Missy Elliott, Jay Leno, Meg Ryan, and Lin-Manuel Miranda took the stage.
The evening also featured performances paying tribute to the honorees, including a Broadway-style medley for Mr. Crystal, a rendition of “Alfie” by Cynthia Erivo, and a series of Bee Gees songs performed by Ariana DeBose.
For Mr. Crystal, a scene from Katz’s Delicatessen was projected onstage, depicting a memorable moment from his career alongside co-star, Meg Ryan.
For Mr. Gibb, musicians such as Barbra Streisand, Dolly Parton and Paul McCartney reflected on his extensive list of songs. Lionel Richie praised his impact on the music industry and emphasized the importance of kindness and understanding.
Ms. Fleming, known as “the people’s diva,” expressed gratitude for the opportunity to highlight the arts, while reflecting on the impact artists have on society.
Queen Latifah, visibly moved by the event, was honored by Missy Elliott, who recalled the impact of her feminist anthem, “Ladies First,” and the message it conveyed during a time when male dominance was prevalent.
The show is set to be broadcast on CBS on Dec. 27.
