On November 28, 2019, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray became the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. This decision was met with criticism from many, who questioned his lack of experience and accused him of benefiting from dynastic rule. However, Thackeray has managed to achieve significant milestones in his role. Despite his limited administrative background, he successfully led Maharashtra during the COVID-19 pandemic, kept the BJP at bay despite opposition, and maintained a stable coalition government with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Thackeray’s success can be attributed to his ability to listen, consult experienced individuals, and take action. He also benefits from the support and advice of strategist Sharad Pawar of the NCP. Maharashtra is a key state, sending 48 Ministers to Parliament and housing the financial hub of Mumbai, giving the ruling power significant control over wealth and resources. Historically, Maharashtra has kept the BJP out of power, and it was only in recent times that the party gained influence through an alliance with the Sena. However, the Sena, along with the Congress and NCP, now poses a strong opposition to the BJP. Thackeray initially faced skepticism, but quickly gained respect for his willingness to listen and learn from others. He demonstrated a quick understanding of issues and made decisions based on consultation. Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, Thackeray implemented tough, yet compassionate lockdown policies. He ensured access to food for migrant laborers through the Shiv Bhojan Thali initiative, appealed to employers to continue paying wages, and eased ostracism faced by returning migrants. Thackeray effectively communicated with the public through social media and transparent speeches, earning respect and recognition as an independent leader. Thackeray has consolidated power and made his voice the dominant one within Mantralaya. Despite the challenges of managing a three-party coalition, he has successfully held the MVA together, providing a strong opposition to the BJP. Thackeray’s ability to remain unflappable in the face of opposition and controversies, such as the Sushant Singh Rajput case and alleged plots, is commendable. Supporters believe these incidents are manufactured by the BJP’s dirty tricks department. Thackeray’s decision to break the Sena-BJP alliance and partner with the Congress and NCP stemmed from the BJP’s refusal to acknowledge their agreement to share the chief minister’s position. This move showcased Thackeray’s resolve and his refusal to tolerate condescension. Despite initial doubts, Thackeray has proven himself to be a capable and strong leader.
