Users may soon have increased control over their profile on Google Messages

Google introduced the Profiles feature in Google Messages last year, but is currently in the process of rolling out this profile discovery feature to all users. Recent settings suggest that Google is implementing privacy options for this feature, allowing users to control who can view their profile name and picture. Google Messages is gaining popularity as the main platform for RCS messaging on Android, prompting more companies to switch to Messages. It is crucial for Messages to adapt to meet the needs of a wider user base.

Profiles, also known as Profile Discovery, was announced by Google in November 2023. While the rollout is ongoing, evidence indicates that Google is addressing privacy concerns related to profile discovery. In the beta version of Google Messages v20241010, users will have more control over who can see their name and profile picture. Three privacy options will be available: sharing with everyone you message, sharing with only your contacts, or hiding completely.

It is uncertain if choosing the “No one” option will disable profile discovery altogether. These new options aim to address privacy concerns surrounding the visibility of users’ names and profile pictures. Note that Google Messages currently uses the profile name and picture from the user’s Google account.

Profiles have yet to be released widely to all Google Messages users, despite the feature being announced a year ago. Google’s efforts to address privacy concerns before a full rollout are promising. The timeline for when all users will have access to this feature remains unknown. For tips or feedback, contact news@androidauthority.com. Your anonymity or credit will be respected.
