Potential introduction of a Gemini button for Gmail on Android discovered in APK teardown

Edgar Cervantes from Android Authority has discovered references to a new Gemini button in the Gmail Android app. Enabling the feature revealed a full-featured version of Gemini within Gmail, similar to the button available for Workspace users on the web.

Google has previously offered a Gemini button in Gmail for Workspace users, allowing them to access email summaries and perform other tasks. It appears that this feature could soon be coming to the Gmail Android app as well. An APK teardown by Android Authority in partnership with AssembleDebug uncovered these references in the Gmail Android app (version 2024.05.19.635289964).

The new Gemini button in Gmail for Android, represented by a star icon next to the archive button, offers a variety of functions beyond email summaries. Users can make queries, ask for reply suggestions, and change response tones. However, deeper integration with Gmail, such as accessing unread emails within the chat window, seems to be limited for now.

While the Gemini button is already available on Gmail for the web, it is currently restricted to Workspace users. It remains uncertain if this feature will be released to the public in the future.
