The BJP’s Maharashtra unit has taken an aggressive stance against Opposition parties regarding the issue of contractual recruitment. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the process was actually implemented during the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule has demanded an unconditional apology from the Opposition parties for falsely blaming the BJP for the issue. Bawankule echoed Fadnavis’ statement, saying, “Contractual recruitment is a concept that was introduced by Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray. The Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Shiv Sena (UBT) supported the policy, but after a change in the government, they blamed the BJP.”
“The Opposition should apologize to the people of Maharashtra. If they do not do so, the BJP will launch an agitation across Maharashtra. We will expose their double standards,” he further stated.
These remarks were made a day after Fadnavis announced that the Maharashtra government has decided to cancel the Government Resolution (GR) on contractual recruitment in various departments due to growing unrest among unemployed youth.
During the announcement, Fadnavis criticized the Opposition parties saying, “The concept and process of contractual recruitment, including the empanelment of nine agencies through the tender process, was introduced during the MVA government led by Thackeray. The decision was taken after consultation among MVA alliance partners Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP,” Fadnavis said.

“Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena (UBT), who introduced the contractual recruitment drive concept, have the audacity to accuse us of contractual recruitment,” Fadnavis said. “Why should we take responsibility for their mistake? Why should we take responsibility for their decision and face criticism? Therefore, we have decided to cancel contractual recruitment in government jobs.”
Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar also criticized the Opposition on the issue.
In the meantime, BJP workers in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar held demonstrations against Thackeray and Sharad Pawar for “misleading people on contractual recruitment”. BJP and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) protesters also confronted each other, resulting in tension and requiring police intervention.
